EXTRACT FROM EPISODE;
HOLLYOAKS

     Focus on the eye really interesting; whose eye is it and are they trying to show fear or guilt? Whatever is being felt its clearly not happiness. Jake Dean is back! He is being questioned by someone, maybe his therapist? He explains how he is disappointed that he hurt his whole family in what he did. Jumps to Newt; really interesting to see this parallel because as they show Newt sitting on a bench about to run away, Jake is still talking and whilst he is actually talking about himself and explaining how his actions caused pain for his family, it all applies to Newt as well. Eli is also back! The Dean family are shown and Steph is really upset about Sarah being dead. Frankie doesn’t show much concern but i think that’s only because she is worried about Newt. I felt sorry for Frankie because I think you can see that she obviously really cares about Newt.

     Kris, Nancy & Elliot and watching an old video and reminiscing about Sarah; a lot of people are affected by Sarah’s death including Elliot. I don’t think he knows how to deal with it really and feels awkward which is why he gets up to put some music on. I think that Kris is being really supportive and helpful. However I thought that Kris should of walked Nancy back home. The use of the non-diagetic background music being played over when Kris turns the TV off made me feel slightly sad; it was almost as if by turning the TV off they were shutting out Sarah from their lives. I’m sure it also brought out emotions in other viewers. As it goes to show Newt instantly I feel sorry for him because Eli is there and from previous storylines I know that Eli is a bad character! He can see that Newt is vulnerable and makes out that Newt did actually kill Gaz when he knows he didn’t really! He is a manipulative character who brings out the worst in Newt; however it does also annoy me because Newt should be taking his medication.

     The scene in where Elliot is remembering Sarah telling him all the boys she has kissed is quite touching; straight away this is disrupted when the officer walks in. I felt really annoyed that they try blaming Elliot for assaulting the officer! Newt is really hungry and  whilst watching that scene I just wanted him to go home! He’s suffering for no reason as no-one at home believes that he did hit Gaz.  Instead he goes through a bin and gets some food out of it; he is actually willing to eat it which made me feel sick especially when they showed a maggot on it! The sound and noises of him heaving made me feel physically ill. I know Steph doesn’t like Jake but I feel like she should go see her step-brother as although he has done wrong all he’s got left is his family who should be supporting him. Seeing Jake looking out the window waiting for Steph, I really felt for him because I wish that everyone else would stop giving him such a hard time! He has been sent away for a long time and been giving a lot of counselling; first of all he was sent away for something that he didn’t even do! Although he did wrong by Nancy I believe that she should forgive him and let him get on with his life; she doesn’t need to be friends with him or anything but just be civil. Everyone makes mistakes, its just part of life.

     Going back to newt and Eli, once again I think Eli is just trying to corrupt Newt and is a really bad influence on him. Although he made me laugh when he makes a comment about the old woman just spending all her money on bingo.  I didn’t actually think that Newt would attack the woman but as Eli is provoking him I can see why he does it! The music is once again also really effective.

INTRODUCTIONS;
EASTENDERS

     Straight away you can tell where this is going to be set; in London as it shows the river Thames and a bird’s eye view of London. The beginning sounds of the loud drums are really effective, and then it flows into a more natural sounding piece of music. The introduction is kept very simple; there are no complicated camera angles or shots. None of the characters are shown either which is effective in way as it makes you want to watch the show; what sort of characters WILL be in this soap

 CORONATION STREET TRAILERS; EMMERDALE

     This intro opens up with a shot of a row of terraced houses. I think a trumpet or some sort of jazz instrument is being played as whilst the music sounds jazz like, I personally believe it is incredibly boring. Throughout the whole introduction all that is shown are rows of houses and streets! The music is not exciting at all, the tone and pitch stay at the same level and no important characters are seen. No action takes place apart from a cat walking down the roof of a house. Although the Eastenders introduction only shows a bird’s eye view of London, the music is exciting and it is fast paced unlike Coronation Street which is slow and in my personal opinion drags on. This introduction definitely puts me off from watching the show!

TRAILERS;
EMMERDALE

     Straight away I was interested and intrigued; this woman was just looking upon a man who was in bed but she looked evil and guilt; has she just killed him or is he sleeping? The non diagetic sound of a song being overplayed is also effective. The lyrics “since you’ve been away” lead me to believe that this is a character that has come back from the past?

     They are clearly in a very fancy but old fashioned expensive room which I find really beautiful! Perhaps they are at a hotel suite? As the woman sits down in front of the dresser table, she tries to be seductive by running her hands up her neck and applying lipstick. Her nails are painted black; perhaps this represents her evil nature? Her hair is also black and she runs her hands through her hair, before pulling it off and revealing that it is a wig! Who is this woman and why was she pretending to be someone else? A close up shot is used to show her kissing the mirror and she then drops her dressing gown and gets into the bath-tub which is oddly placed right in the middle of the room.

     She sinks into the bathtub and the water overflows; a close up shot is used on her face and the camera slowly zooms right into her eyes, when she opens them she has been transformed into a different setting and location. The camera zooms out to show her standing in the rain all by herself outside; she looks up and sees a signpost which points into the direction of Emmerdale. The music is very parallel; the lyrics fit exactly what is happening, “Trouble and misery” is said as she stands in the wet pouring rain before she hitch hikes a ride. Where will she go? And what happened to that man? As I have never watched Emmerdale before I am completely unaware of what is going on and this trailer really did interest me! I had lots of questions going round in my head and I have definitely been persuaded now to watch a few episodes J
